World Cancer Day
World Cancer Day is commemorated on 4th February. Many people have loved ones or have heard of someone who was diagnosed with cancer.
I’m impressed by the work of Dr Kelly Turner, author of Radical Remission and Radical Hope.
Dr. Kelly Turner researched hundreds of cancer patients who experienced radical remissions. She condensed her findings into ten common healing factors. These are ten healthy lifestyle choices that lead to a significantly stronger immune system and better overall health and wellness.
The first healing factor is to empower yourself. We are often taught to simply accept what our doctors tell us without question. But what if you do have questions, do you have the boldness to ask?
Empowering yourself simply means taking ownership of your health. It may also mean finding medical professionals who are neither threatened nor intimidated by your curiosity. Expanding your healing team to include other perspectives and healing modalities is also a form of empowerment. It actually shows you that cancer treatment is not simple and straightforward, but is indeed as unique and complex as each person is unique.
This concept really resonates with me. I had the opportunity to work in an oncology unit some years ago. There is one big lesson I learned during that year. That was to always treat every unique individual (with a disease) with compassion and not just to treat the disease that had the individual.
We shall explore some more healing factors in the next few posts
